Galashiels Station Brae Road
The project consisted of 1km single lane carriageway, two roundabouts, a 125 space long-stay car park, access roads and parking for the refurbished health centre, together with the demolition of an 80m long road bridge and smaller footbridge.
The roadworks also included drainage, street lighting, traffic signals and hard/soft landscaping.
Six structures were also required, including the construction of a large reinforced concrete box structure bridge to accommodate the future Waverley route rail line reinstatement, construction of a three-lane road bridge across the Gala Water, two reinforced earth retaining walls and two mass concrete and masonry faced retaining walls.
Further challenges included the need for extensive sheet piled temporary works with soil anchors to enable the rail bridge construction. Service diversions for all major utilities were also required and were critical to the contract programme.
Early involvement with the client’s team in the form of a partnering workshop allowed a positive beginning to this varied and interesting project.
