Marine Parade Bridge
The Marine Way Bridge provides access to a new business park across a lake. It is an impressive new addition to the Southport skyline, with a span of 120 metres. The innovative structure was designed by Babtie in conjunction with Balfour Beatty for a project in Scotland and the results have been transferred to Southport with great success.
Interesting facts:
- The bridge contains a massive 18,000 tonnes of concrete;
- 1,500 tonnes of steel reinforcement;
- There are 31 miles of seven strand cable making up the 18 main cables
- The main pylon is 56 metres above water and 50 metres above road level;
- A 500 tonne crane was required to lift the anchor block to the top of the pylon
- The block pylon itself weighs 60 tonnes
- The breaking load of the heaviest loaded main cable is 1,500 tonnes
The construction involved significant temporary works in a marine environment which were designed in-house by our Temporary Works Design Department.
